Stannous sulfate is an inorganic compound containing tin in the +2 oxidation state (stannous ion, Sn²⁺) and the sulfate ion (SO₄²⁻). It’s typically encountered as a white or light-colored crystalline solid and is used in various industrial applications, like electroplating and anodizing.

Properties of Stannous Sulfate
  1. Chemical Formula: SnSO₄
  2. Molar Mass: Approximately 214.77 g/mol
  3. Appearance: White or off-white crystalline powder or solid
  4. Solubility:
    • Soluble in water (around 35 g/100 mL at 20°C), but hydrolysis occurs in neutral or basic solutions, forming insoluble tin(II) hydroxide or related compounds.
    • Insoluble in ethanol and most organic solvents.
  5. Melting Point: Decomposes before melting, typically around 360°C, releasing sulfur trioxide (SO₃) and forming tin oxides.
  6. Density: About 4.15 g/cm³
  7. Oxidation State: Tin is in the +2 state, making it a reducing agent. It can oxidize to Sn⁴⁺ (stannic form) when exposed to air or oxidizing agents.
  8. Reactivity:
    • Acts as a reducing agent in chemical reactions.
    • Sensitive to air and moisture, where it may slowly oxidize or hydrolyze.

Stannous sulfate solution is mainly used for coloring aluminum profiles by an anodizing process in the building industry. Stannous sulfate is also used in electroplating, for electrolytic tin plating..
